Sheffield Activities

  • Possibly The Most Family – Friendly City In Britain
  • A Party Animal’s Jungle
  • The Ultimate Stag & Hen Destination

Just 160 miles away from London, between the counties of Yorkshire and Derbyshire, Sheffield lies at the foot of the Pennine highlands right where four different streams — the Sheaf, Porter, Rivelin and Loxley — converge and form the great River Don.

Escafeld, as Sheffield was known when it aroused out of history’s mist, eventually developed into a menacing industrial rival to London, and finally into a modern, vibrant city, boasting one of the best universities in Britain.

Sheffield is an extremely family-friendly city: it offers so many diverse options to spend days or afternoons with your loved-ones, from the Tropical Butterfly House and Gardens to adventure parks, from climbing to skating (or even ice skating), Sheffield is the ultimate family destination.

But that’s not all…Sheffield by night transforms into a magnet for those looking for great dining and entertainment.

Things to See & Do

Loving Nature

The Tropical Butterfly House is home to amazing animals from all around the World, offering you the chance for an exciting close-up encounter. Take your family and see meerkats, lemurs, owls, wallabies, snakes, birds and many more species that remind us how beautiful a place Earth is.

If you are interested in a more interactive approach to nature’s treasures, you can visit Graves Park, where you will find a nice little farm, hosting some wonderful domestic animals as well as exotic wildlife species, like alpacas. The staff can also show you how to feed them – something that will really excite the kids.

Finally, there are the Botanic Gardens, housing more than 5,000 species of fauna – just ideal for a relaxing stroll surrounded by stunning rose gardens and rare flower scents.

Visit Sheffield Cathedral

Being the oldest building in Sheffield that is still in use, the city’s Cathedral draws its origin in 12th century medieval England. Currently a stunning amalgam of various architectural trends, whose most distinguished trait are the stained glass windows, narrating stories from the Bible, Sheffield Cathedral is truly magnificent.

Go Treasure Hunting in the Antiques Quarter

Are you a vintage furniture and retro object hunter? Then there is an asylum in Sheffield for people like you. They call it the Antiques Quarter. Be aware though, because time simply passes by a lot quicker there!

A Climber’s Haven

When it comes to climbing, Sheffield is the unrivalled scepter-holder in England. Having the peaks just a few minutes away from the city’s centre, experienced locals and visitors simply love this fascinating sport. If, on the other hand, you have just learned the basics, there are loads of places you can practice and gain experience.

First of all, there is the climbing boulder at Heeley Park, with available gear without charge. Then, there are several indoor facilities: Foundry Climbing, for example has over 200 routes, and more than 1,100 m2 of climbing walls, with special areas for children of all ages. The Edge Climbing Centre, on the other hand, houses over 150 marked routes and guarantees a unique indoor climbing experience.

The Awesome Walls Climbing Centre in another great option, which is more family–oriented, with a dedicated children’s climbing zone and 2 bouldering areas, but with plenty of advancement scope for veteran climbers to enjoy too, with over 300 routes across 104 lines.

Finally, there is the Climbing Works, Europe’s biggest bouldering centre, with a dedicated kid’s bouldering facility.

Accept the Sheffield Round Walk Challenge

If you have an entire day to spare, brace yourself and accept the Sheffield Round Walk challenge: a 14 – mile trek that passes through some of the most picturesque places in Sheffield, down from epic dams to steep woodland trails.

If your physical level is up to it, take your friends or mate and go for it.

A Skater’s City

If you love skating, then don’t forget your skateboard or skates before visiting Sheffield. There are several places designed to help you practice and improve your moves.

The Devonshire Green has a small skate park, open to the public, or you can try the House Skate park, a 10,500 ft2 warehouse that houses an array of street and pro style equipment for all levels of experience and skill, including a 16ft mini ramp with a moveable extension linked to an inverted hip flat bank, which in turn connects to a wall ride, a flat bank, a 8ft high quarter pipe and a 5ft quarter pipe end piece, plus a rail and a deathbox hooked to a 23ft long foot high grind box, a low driveway with long centre box and a rainbow rail, plus a 6ft high roll-in and a 12ft wide quarter pipe. You are allowed to bring rollerblades, razor scooters, snakeboards and roller boots.

Another great option is the Skate Central of Sheffield, which is a bit more family–oriented, with several themed sessions.

Laser Tag at Quasar Sheffield

Quasar Sheffield has a great laser tag arena, exceptionally designed and equipped with awesome visual and sound effects that raise the whole game to a different level. Stalk your opponents through the dusky maze, and battle your way to the very end. Numerous structural innovations, immersive rooms, ultra violet lighting and loads of other surprises will make your battle the best ever.

Laser Quest Sheffield, on the other hand, is a genuine ultimate action packed Sci-fi adventure for combatants equipped with high tech infra red gear that enter a real life video game! If you often dreamt of storming a battlefield, but without all the creepy stuff, the blood and the bruises, take your comrades and “hated” enemies and fight to the last breath, in a perfectly designed environment with multi level arenas and superb audio visual effects.

Go Parkwood Karting

Are you a speed addict? Parkwood Karting is the perfect place for that sort of affliction!

With Junior karting available, along with experienced trainers (ideal for children of at least 8 years old), and with all the necessary equipment provided, you will enjoy a day of sharp turns and endless fun. If you love competition, you can also print out your lap times and show them around to disbelieving friends.

Ice Skating

Sheffield National Ice Centre is a temple dedicated to those who love recreational ice skating or want to learn its secrets and magic.

With a Penguin Club for children of 1,5 to 5 years old that learns children to ice skate through playing, grownups have the time to enjoy their favorite sport, as well as Ice Hockey and, right beside, at Altitude an adventurous high ropes course with over 30 challenges (rope bridges, swinging logs, climbing walls etc). So, it’s family – friendly, couples – friendly, singles –friendly; so, the perfect choice.

Try Adventure Golf

The Paradise Island Adventure Golf consists of almost nearly 14,000 square feet of Adventure Golfing, 2 golf courses and 2 separate levels of play.

Tropical décor, great landscapes (from the depth of sea caves to desert ravages and jungle swelters) and several unusual obstacles that need skill to overcome and get the ball to tricky but always achievable holes – a truly amazing option for all the family and friends.

Stags & Hens

You may have already heard many stories about Sheffield’s nightlife: Innumerable spectacular clubs, the best pubs in Britain, parties everywhere, far-reaching and diverse options.
